Anti-Racism is Good Trouble - Spring Break RIISE Newsletter

In my fifteen years as an independent school parent, last evening was a first. Thirty-two families, mostly white, returned to debrief a previously well attended (over 90! - I know) anti-racism parent development workshop a week earlier.

As a school, we are on our way to BECOMING anti-racist, which has created some friction. You've read the articles and anonymous letters. I dare say they are the reason for folks showing up along with the recent anti-Asian violence. It is clear where we are and where we need to be -in alignment with and living up to our schools' very mission.

My one wish is that families grow with their children in becoming empathetic life long learners. We all win with love and the truth.

Spring Break begins today in my school community, and I look forward to the opportunity to release some pent-up racial stress to embrace self-care, family, and play.

Dr. Marta Effinger Crichlow articulates with us the importance of play and the value of the personal narrative in culturally responsive curriculum. We hope you check it out along with
Dr. Eddie Moore Jr.'s straight, no chaser way of articulating the facts about anti-racism in our independent schools. We dedicated that episode of Articulating - An Independent School Podcast  to our
AAPI sisters and brothers.

This is iterative work, and we are committed to advocating on behalf of our Black and Brown scholars and our schools. On April 10, we are thrilled to be back in the community lead by parent, educator, and alum collaborators for a timely workshop, Cause No Harm: Curricular Concerns & How to Cure Them.

Joining us for the keynote conversation is Dan-el Padilla Peralta, Associate Professor of Classics at Princeton. You may remember this recent NYT article He Wants To Save Classics From Whiteness. Can The Field Survive? . It just so happens, and ideally so in solidarity, each workshop Lead Collaborator is a woman in honor of their brilliant thought-leadership! We can't wait to introduce you to them.

One more event to keep in mind and note on your calendar is our 9th RIISE Parent Power Conference on May 24! You know how we do it, part recruitment, part enrollment, and a whole lot of love for our scholars and independent schools working to be all they can be. More to come!
